We said goodbye to Lighthouse Brewing in Victoria at the end of January.
The brewery has now shut down operations after 27 years in business, which I covered in this beer column two weeks ago.
Phillips Brewing has purchased the brand to ensure some of their beloved core creations live on, but the closure likely means the end of many of Lighthouse’s seasonal creations.
And while the brewery has now closed its doors, you can still find some of those creations kicking around in liquor stores.
That includes the Lights Out mixer, a four pack that contains four tasty winter creations in the Mexican Chocolate Ale, Hazelnut Dark Ale, Seaport Vanilla Stout and Nightwatch Coffee Lager.
This fun seasonal mixer can still be found in over 80 BC Liquor Stores across the province, but once it’s gone you will not be able to find it again.
Now, I’m currently on paternity leave, so I’m taking a brief moment of calmness in my home to put out this beer column today.
With that in mind, I will be up front and say that I am simply copy and pasting these beer descriptions that were provided by Lighthouse before the brewery shut down.
It’s a bit of a half-assed effort, I know, but I wanted to at least put something out for you today. It’ll likely be a similar story next weekend before I return to work full time later this month!
Mexican Chocolate Ale (5.2% ABV)
Brewed with cocoa, cinnamon, and caramel, and rounded out by a touch of coffee. Perfect for hammock hangs, cozy nights, and anyone who believes dessert can come in a can.
Hazelnut Dark Ale (5.2% ABV)
Brewed with chocolate, caramel, and hazelnut, and balanced with a touch of coffee, this dark ale is all about easy sipping and cooler days ahead.
Seaport Vanilla Stout (5.5% ABV)
This easy drinking stout harbours real Madagascan vanilla beans to complement the rich roasted malt notes of chocolate and coffee. Well balanced with a rich mouthfeel and a hint of sweetness... all anchored by that aromatic African vanilla.
Nightwatch Coffee Lager (5.1% ABV)
Locally produced cold brew coffee and crisp, clean, craft lager are blended seamlessly to create a one of a kind beer. Subtle tones of hazelnut, cinnamon and chocolate round out this distinct and refreshing brew, making Nightwatch Coffee Lager the perfect beer - day or night.
