Bizarre Kelowna road incident unfolds after man climbs onto roof of SUV on Hwy 97

A man was arrested after climbing onto the roof of a vehicle as it sat in traffic at a busy Kelowna intersection on Saturday.

Video of the incident has surfaced online courtesy of a man who pulled over to render assistance to the driver of the SUV.

The dash cam footage shared by Mike Demianiuk shows him pulling over behind the helpless driver stopped in the eastbound left turn lane on Hwy 97 approaching Spall Road.

After briefly speaking with the person behind the wheel, Demianiuk begins his efforts to get the man to get off the roof of the blue Toyota SUV.

Those efforts are unsuccessful at first, however, which leads to a bit of an altercation between the two parties that sends Demianiuk back onto the median with the man’s shoe in hand.

After a brief verbal exchange, Demianiuk tries again to climb up onto the roof to get the man down, but is met with a kick to the face as the stranger becomes more agitated.

Eventually, the man concedes and gets down from the roof, saying a few things to Damianiuk and potentially the driver before returning to the highway median.

A spokesperson for the Kelowna RCMP confirmed that officers responded to the incident and arrested the man who was on top of the SUV’s roof for “causing a disturbance.”

“He was transported to hospital for assessment,” the spokesperson said. “An investigation into how the male got on top of the vehicle has been opened.”

Demianiuk, who jestfully captioned his social media post of the dash cam footage with “making friends!,” was praised in the comment section for acting to help the driver of the Toyota.
