Suspect in Tumbler Ridge school massacre named as 18-year-old former student

(UPDATE: Feb. 11 at 12 pm): Police in Tumbler Ridge have revealed the identity of the now-dead suspected killer in Tuesday's massacre.

They said it was Jesse Vanrootselaar, an 18-year-old biological male who identified as a transgender female.

Vanrootselaar was from Tumbler Ridge, the RCMP said.

Police also confirmed that eight people – not nine, as originally stated – were killed in the tragedy. Vanrootselaar is also believed to have killed himself, police said.

Speaking at a press conference today, the RCMP also revealed that:

  • Two guns – a long gun and a modified handgun – were recovered at the scene by officers
  • Police visited the home of the suspected murderer multiple times in recent years for matters relating to mental health, with some of the incidents concerning weapons
  • Among those murdered at the school were a female teacher aged 39 and three female students and two male students aged between 12 and 13
  • Two people were also murdered at a home in Tumbler Ridge: an adult female aged 39 (believed to be Vanrootselaar's mother) and a boy aged 11 (believed to be Vanrootselaar's brother)
  • Vanrootselaar was not a student at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, having dropped out four years ago

“We understand the community has questions and wants to understand the motive behind this tragic incident," Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald said at the press conference.

"We do believe the suspect acted alone and there are currently no other outstanding suspects. Our investigators remain on scene, actively gathering information to determine the full circumstances of what transpired."

Earlier today, the House of Commons paid tribute to the victims of yesterday's atrocity.

Mark Carney hailed Tumbler Ridge as a town "carved out of the wilderness" and built "by the determination of its residents."

"Tumbler Ridge represents the very best of Canada," he added. "Resilient, compassionate and strong." Carney also praised the first responders and teachers in the town.

"We have been here before," Carney went on, before listing recent mass shootings in Canada. "The École polytechnique in Montreal. The Islamic Cultural Centre of Quebec City. La Loche, Saskatchewan. Portapique, Nova Scotia. Each time, it breaks us open. Each time, Canadians show who we are."

(UPDATE: Feb. 11 at 7:24 am): Mark Carney has made a tearful statement to the Canadian public following the killing of nine people in Tumbler Ridge on Tuesday.

Speaking early today, the prime minister said: "Parents, grandparents, sisters, brothers in Tumbler Ridge will wake up without someone they love. The nation mourns with you, Canada stands by you."

He also thanked world leaders for sending their consolations, including "His Majesty himself."

"All assistance, obviously, will be offered," he said.

Carney said he has also instructed that flags be flown at half-mast for seven days.

Pierre Poilievre, the leader of the opposition, also made a statement this morning.

The Tory chief said "the fact this took place at a secondary school makes it even more tragic ... as a father, I can't even imagine the phone calls that parents might have received."

He added: "I encourage all Canadians to pray for the community and pray for the families."

(UPDATE: Feb. 11 at 5:07 am): Nine people were killed in the shootings at Tumbler Ridge on Wednesday, police have confirmed.

The lone suspect also died by suicide.

Another 25 people are being assessed and triaged at the local medical centre for non‑life‑threatening injuries, the RCMP explained.

Police have revealed very few other details about the incident, which took place at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and "a secondary location believed to be connected to the incident."

No information has yet been released about the victims or the suspect.

On Tuesday, however, police put out at an alert warning of a suspect described as a "female in a dress with brown hair."

Prime Minister Mark Carney has cancelled his planned trip to Germany today because of the tragedy.

He said he was "devastated" by the "horrific shootings."

Carney added: "Our ability to come together in crisis is the best of our country – our empathy, our unity, and our compassion for each other."

Premier David Eby, meanwhile, said in a press conference on Tuesday that the "devastating and unimaginable tragedy" was "causing us all to hug our kids a little bit tighter." He added that he will be heading to Tumbler Ridge as soon as he can get there.

Federal Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree is coordinating the federal response to the incident.

World leaders have also expressed their sympathies, among them Keir Starmer of the UK, Emmanuel Macron of France, Narendra Modi of India and Volodomyr Zelensky of Ukraine.

“This was a rapidly evolving and dynamic situation, and the swift cooperation from the school, first responders, and the community played a critical role in our response,” Supt. Ken Floyd, the RCMP's North District Commander, was quoted as saying in a police bulletin.

“Our thoughts are with the families, loved ones, and all those impacted by this tragic incident. This has been an incredibly difficult and emotional day for our community, and we are grateful for the cooperation shown as officers continue their work to advance the investigation.”

(Original story: Feb. 10 at 7 pm): Several people are dead and others are injured following a mass shooting incident in the small northern BC community of Tumbler Ridge today.

The RCMP says reports of an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School came in around 1:20 pm and a public alert was issued as officers responded.

Police entered the school and found “multiple victims.” The suspected shooter was also found dead with “what appears to be a self-inflicted injury,” an RCMP release explained.

In total, six individuals apart from the shooter were found dead inside the school and another died while being transported to hospital.

Two victims were airlifted to hospital with critical injuries and 25 others are being assessed at the local medical centre for non-life-threatening injuries.

As the early stages of the investigation unfolded, police say two more victims were found dead in a residence “believed to be connected to the incident.”

“Officers are conducting further searches of additional homes and properties to determine whether anyone else may be injured or otherwise linked to today’s events,” the RCMP release noted.

Supt. Ken Floyd, the BC RCMP’s North District commander, called today’s tragic event a “rapidly evolving and dynamic situation.”

He praised the “swift cooperation” between the school, first responders and community members as the situation unfolded.

“Our thoughts are with the families, loved ones and all those impacted by this tragic incident,” Floyd said in a provided statement.

“This has been an incredibly difficult and emotional day for our community, and we are grateful for the cooperation shown as officers continue their work to advance the investigation.”

Floyd debriefed the situation again during a press conference at 6:45 pm but would not divulge any further information about the incident or suspect.

A significant number of RCMP resources have been deployed to the community to support the incident response and investigation into the mass shooting.

The RCMP release added that the Major Crime Unit is leading the investigation and working to determine the full circumstances surrounding today’s tragedy.

Tumbler Ridge, around a four-hour drive northeast of Prince George, has a population of just under 2,500 people.
