Road conditions are believed to be a primary factor in a single-vehicle crash that claimed two lives in northern BC this week.
Northern Rockies RCMP received an automated crash detection notification at 4:45 am MST on Tuesday.
First responders reached the scene on the Alaska Highway near the 605-kilometre mark and discovered a loaded semi with a trailer that had crashed off the highway.
“The vehicle appeared to have broken through a guard rail before coming to rest down a steep embankment,” explained an RCMP release.
Unfortunately, both occupants inside the cab at the time of the crash suffered fatal injuries, police confirmed.
“While the investigation is in its infancy, road conditions appear to have been a factor in the crash,” noted S/Sgt. Kris Clark. “Work continues to extract the vehicle and its load from the embankment.”
According to the RCMP, the highway remains closed in both directions for vehicle recovery and isn’t expected to reopen until the late afternoon or early evening.
Motorists are encouraged to check DriveBC for the latest. Anyone who witnesses the fatal single-vehicle crash on Tuesday is urged to contact the Northern Rockies RCMP at 250-774-2700.
