Conservation officers have determined that a Monday night grizzly attack in northern BC was defensive in nature.
It happened on a rural property in the Vanderhoof area around 5 pm.
According to the BC Conservation Officer Service (BCCOS), the victim was walking his two off-leash dogs on his farm property when the bear attacked.
The bear became disengaged and ran off after the man was able to “scramble under a barbed-wire fence,” the BCCOS explained.
The victim suffered non-life-threatening leg injuries during the incident and needed medical treatment in an area hospital.
Both Mounties and conservation officers responded to the attack site and conducted a sweep of the area, but were unable to locate a bear.
“The BCCOS investigation included collecting and assessing evidence at the scene, as well as interviewing the victim at the hospital,” noted the BCCOS debrief.
“Based on the location and the circumstances surrounding the attack, officers have determined the attack was defensive in nature and there was no continued threat to public safety.”
Trail cameras have now been placed in the area to monitor bear activity.
