A weekend search for a missing snowmobiler near the Yukon border in northwestern BC came to a tragic end on Sunday.
The Atlin RCMP says a break in the weather on Sunday allowed a helicopter and snowmobile group to finally access the area where the missing snowmobiler was believed to be.
Around 2 pm, the man was found dead around four kilometres from his last known location.
He went missing on Friday night after becoming separated from two other snowmobilers in what police describe as “treacherous winter conditions and zero visibility.”
The three of them had originally set out to retrieve a broken-down snowmachine in the Haines Pass area.
The same inclement weather conditions that created the situation Friday night hampered rescue efforts on Saturday before Mother Nature finally offered the reprieve on Sunday.
As no criminality is suspected, the BC Coroners Service is leading the investigation into the man’s untimely death.
Police thanked the snowmobile group that pitched in on rescue efforts, which consisted of the victim’s family and friends, and extended their condolences to them.
