A man is in hospital with serious injuries following an early-morning incident involving Penticton RCMP that is now under investigation by B.C.’s police watchdog.
BC RCMP say officers were called to a report of mischief in progress around 4:24 a.m. Tuesday near Lakeshore Drive and Winnipeg Street, where a man was allegedly smashing windows.
Police say an interaction occurred between a responding officer and the suspect after officers arrived at the scene. During the encounter, a conducted energy weapon was deployed.
Mounties say the officer requested immediate assistance and additional officers attended. The suspect was later pinned between a police vehicle and a retaining wall.
The man was provided medical assistance at the scene before being taken to hospital with serious injuries.
One officer involved in the incident was also transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released.
The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has been notified and is now investigating police actions in the incident. Police say the area was cordoned off to support the investigation.
Penticton RCMP are also conducting a separate investigation into the actions of the suspect. No further information will be released by police while the IIO investigation is underway.
