A 23-year-old man is dead after an avalanche in the Kootenay Pass area on Saturday.
Creston RCMP say they were alerted at about 12:10 p.m. MST on Feb. 28 after receiving an SOS activation from a Garmin device mapping to the Kootenay Pass.
Police were then told an avalanche had occurred involving two snowmobilers, one of whom was non-responsive.

The avalanche was determined to be a size 2.5 and occurred in the transmission line area behind Camel’s Hump.
Other snowmobilers nearby rushed to help and were able to extract both men from the snow before emergency crews arrived.
In a statement describing the incident, Avalanche Canada said: "Two snowmobilers were on a slope under a transmission line when they triggered an avalanche.

"Both were buried before being recovered by other riders in the area.
"Unfortunately, one of the subjects did not survive."
RCMP, Search and Rescue and BC Emergency Health Services responded to the scene.
