Man, 63, killed in Hwy 1 crash was not wearing seatbelt: RCMP

A 63-year-old man is dead following a single-vehicle crash on the Trans-Canada Highway west of Golden, B.C.

Golden-Field RCMP say officers were called at about 7:21 p.m. on Feb. 16 to a collision near the Donald Weigh Scales. Police found a heavily damaged Kenworth tractor unit against a concrete median barrier and a fixed traffic light.

Mounties say the preliminary investigation determined speed relative to icy and snow-covered road conditions, along with the driver not wearing a seatbelt, were contributing factors. Alcohol is not believed to have played a role.

“The RCMP reminds motorists the importance of wearing seatbelts as they significantly reduce the risk of serious injury or death in the event of a motor vehicle collision and to drive to road conditions,” said Const. Donna Freeman, media relations officer for Golden-Field RCMP.

The lone driver died from his injuries at the scene. Police thanked those who assisted in providing life-saving measures.

Police said no further information will be released.
