Hwy 1 reopens between Salmon Arm and Sicamous after head-on collision

The Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) has reopened between Salmon Arm and Sicamous.

It was closed all day after a serious head-on collision between a semi with trailer and Toyota Corolla shortly after 7 am today.

Despite the Corolla suffering extensive damage in the crash, no fatalities were reported and all four occupants are believed to be in stable but critical condition in hospital.

An initial investigation determined that the Corolla, which is a rental car, was heading eastbound when it crossed the centre line attempting to pass a semi near Kangaroo Road.

The driver was unable to complete the pass and collided head-on with the westbound semi, which sent the sedan spinning into the ditch and ejected the engine from the vehicle.

According to police, only one of the four occupants was able to exit the vehicle on their own and the other three needed to be extricated with the jaws of life.

The semi lost control and went off the road as well, but the driver was uninjured and cooperated with the police investigation.

The crash resulted in a full shut down of Hwy 1 for around 10 hours before the major route reopened at 5:30 pm.

Any witnesses, or motorists with relevant dash cam footage, who have yet to speak with investigators are urged to contact the Salmon Arm RCMP at 250-832-6044.
