Dozens of heat records smashed across BC

A ridge of high pressure brought elevated temperatures to B.C. over the weekend, breaking daily heat records in more than two dozen areas.

Environment Canada says 26 daily maximum temperature records were set on Sunday, June 14.

The hottest temperature on the list was recorded in Lytton, where the mercury reached 36.8ºC.

That broke the old record of 35.4ºC set in 2002. Records in the Lytton area have been kept since 1921.

Pemberton reached 36.3ºC, Cache Creek hit 35.6ºC and Lillooet recorded 35.7ºC.

Port Alberni also saw significant heat, reaching 35ºC, while Nanaimo hit 33.2ºC and Victoria reached 30.2ºC.

Vancouver also set a daily record, reaching 26.8ºC. The previous record was 25.6ºC, set in 1932.

The following daily maximum temperature records were set on Sunday, June 14:

  • Abbotsford area: 31.5ºC, breaking the old record of 31ºC set in 1999. Records kept since 1944.
  • Bella Bella area: 24.8ºC, breaking the old record of 22ºC set in 1999. Records kept since 1977.
  • Cache Creek area: 35.6ºC, breaking the old record of 34.4ºC set in 1974. Records kept since 1944.
  • Campbell River area: 32.2ºC, breaking the old record of 28.9ºC set in 1963. Records kept since 1958.
  • Comox area: 30.4ºC, breaking the old record of 29.4ºC set in 1963. Records kept since 1914.
  • Duncan area: 33.9ºC, breaking the old record of 29.4ºC set in 1916. Records kept since 1913.
  • Estevan Point area: 21ºC, breaking the old record of 18ºC set in 1997. Records kept since 1908.
  • Gibsons area: 31ºC, breaking the old record of 26.9ºC set in 2015. Records kept since 1949.
  • Hope area: 31.7ºC, breaking the old record of 31ºC set in 1988. Records kept since 1936.
  • Lillooet area: 35.7ºC, breaking the old record of 35.5ºC set in 2002. Records kept since 1917.
  • Lytton area: 36.8ºC, breaking the old record of 35.4ºC set in 2002. Records kept since 1921.
  • Nanaimo area: 33.2ºC, breaking the old record of 30ºC set in 1963. Records kept since 1892.
  • Pemberton area: 36.3ºC, breaking the old record of 34.9ºC set in 2002. Records kept since 1908.
  • Pitt Meadows area: 33.3ºC, breaking the old record of 30.5ºC set in 1988. Records kept since 1874.
  • Port Alberni area: 35ºC, breaking the old record of 33.3ºC set in 1961. Records kept since 1900.
  • Port Hardy area: 22ºC, breaking the old record of 21.7ºC set in 1944. Records kept since 1944.
  • Powell River area: 30ºC, breaking the old record of 26.9ºC set in 1988. Records kept since 1924.
  • Qualicum Beach area: 30.2ºC, breaking the old record of 27.2ºC set in 1963. Records kept since 1962.
  • Sechelt area: 31ºC, breaking the old record of 26.9ºC set in 2015. Records kept since 1956.
  • Squamish area: 31.9ºC, breaking the old record of 29.5ºC set in 1999. Records kept since 1960.
  • Tatlayoko Lake area: 30.3ºC, breaking the old record of 29ºC set in 2002. Records kept since 1930.
  • Tofino area: 28.5ºC, breaking the old record of 28.3ºC set in 1916. Records kept since 1896.
  • Vancouver area: 26.8ºC, breaking the old record of 25.6ºC set in 1932. Records kept since 1896.
  • Victoria area: 30.2ºC, breaking the old record of 28.6ºC set in 1999. Records kept since 1914.
  • West Vancouver area: 29.2ºC, breaking the old record of 27.6ºC set in 1999. Records kept since 1976.
  • Whistler area: 31.6ºC, breaking the old record of 31.4ºC set in 2002. Records kept since 1950.

Environment Canada says two records were also set on Saturday, June 13:

  • Qualicum Beach area: 26.9ºC, breaking the old record of 26.7ºC set in 1970. Records kept since 1962.
  • Sechelt area: 28ºC, breaking the old record of 27.5ºC set in 2002. Records kept since 1956.

The weather agency says the records are derived from selected historical stations in each geographic area.
