AS of noon today, these types of open fires will be banned in the region that includes the Kamloops, Vernon, Penticton, Merritt and Lillooet subzones.
“Anyone conducting Category 2 or Category 3 open fires within the Kamloops Fire Centre’s jurisdiction must extinguish those fires by May 7 at noon,” a BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) release says.

Essentially, this means all burning other than small campfires are prohibited in an attempt to mitigate wildfire risk following a dry winter and hot start to spring.
Activities and equipment like air curtain burners, carbonizers, binary exploding targets, fireworks, controlled air incinerators and burn barrels are also banned.
Anyone found in contravention of an open burning prohibition can be issued a ticket for $1,150, required to pay an administrative penalty of up to $10,000 or even convicted in court.
If the contravention causes or contributes to a wildfire, the person responsible may be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs.
