BC bars given green light to open and serve booze early for Sunday’s gold medal game

Canada will take on the United States for gold in men’s hockey at Milano Cortina 2026 on Sunday morning.

With NHL players back at the Olympics for the first time in 12 years, it’s arguably the signature event of the Games with the rivalry matchup that most hockey fans were begging for in the final.

It’s the final event of the Games before the closing ceremony Sunday night, which means a 2:10 pm local start time in Italy and a 5:10 am PT puck drop on the west coast of Canada.

While the majority of hockey fans will saunter from their bed to couch for the game, others will want to venture out to watch the game at a local bar with other like-minded hockey fans.

To make that possible, British Columbia Premier David Eby announced Friday night that bars and restaurants can open early for the occasion if they choose.

“Our province is so proud of our Canada men’s hockey team,” he wrote in a social media post. “Also happy to say you can celebrate at one of our local BC hospitality locations with a licensed beverage starting at 5 am Sunday, where local governments allow.”

So if you’d rather watch with dozens of other screaming fans while sipping a cold pint or Baileys and coffee, call your local establishment or check their social media pages to see if they’ll be opening up for the game.
