Olympics Day 9: Kingsbury wins Canada’s 1st gold, men's hockey team tops round robin

(UPDATE: Feb. 15 @ 3:30 pm) - Mikaël Kingsbury's gold medal was Canada's only podium finish of day nine at Milano Cortina 2026.

However, there was no shortage of action on Sunday including a dominant 10-2 win over France for Canada's men's hockey team. With the top record in the round robin, Canada will face the winner of Czechia and Denmark's knockout round matchup in the quarterfinals.

Here's what some other Canadian athletes got up to on Sunday:

  • Brad Jacobs' rink defeated China 6-3 to move to 4-1 in men's curling.
  • Abigail Strate finished 11th in the women's large hill ski jump, the best Olympic result by a Canadian woman in an individual ski jumping event.
  • Xavier McKeever, Antoine Cyr, Rémi Drolet and Tom Stephen finished fifth in the men's 4x7.5km cross country relay.
  • Valérie Grenier finished 13th in the women's giant slalom.
  • Veteran Mark McMorris and 20-year-old Olympic rookie Cameron Spalding qualified for the men's snowboard slopestyle final on Wednesday.
  • Lia Pereira and Trennt Michaud qualified for the pairs free skate final on Monday, but Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Max Deschamps fell short.

Monday could be a big one for Canada with several chances to add to the medal count. That includes gold medal hopefuls Megan Oldham in women's big air skiing, Courtney Sarault in women's short track speed skating 1000m and the men's short track speed skating 5000m relay team.

In women's hockey, Canada takes on Switzerland at 12:10 pm PST in the semifinal. The other semi features the United States against Sweden. There's a good chance it'll be a rematch between Canada and the US in Thursday's final.

(Original story: Feb. 15 @ 7:30 am) - Mikaël Kingsbury has triggered an early edition of the Olympic recap today.

The 33-year-old, who was one of Canada’s two flagbearers at the opening ceremony nine days ago, hit the top of the podium in men’s dual moguls early this morning.

It’s Canada’s first gold medal of Milano Cortina 2026 and the country’s ninth medal overall.

For Kingsbury, it was his second medal of the Games following a silver in men’s moguls on Wednesday.

It’s the first time the “King of Moguls” has been able to win multiple medals at one Olympics because the dual moguls is a brand new event at the Games.

Kingsbury now has five Olympic medals in his career, two of them gold, which makes him the first freestyle skier to reach that milestone.

This gold medal was extra special, as it’s quite possibly the final Olympic event of his career and a moment he got to enjoy with his young son.

Kingsbury, silver medalist Ikuma Horishima of Japan and bronze medalist Matt Graham of Australia all shared the moment with their young children and it was captured in a memorable photo.

NowMedia will update this story with a larger Olympic recap once day nine action finishes up from Italy in a few hours.
