Start your day off right with five things you need to know this morning.

Five things you need to know

1. Majority of Canadians think Canada should explore joining EU: poll

A majority of Canadians reckon Canada should explore joining the European Union, according to a new poll. The Spark Advocacy survey found 58 per cent of respondents wanted to look into joining the political and trading bloc, while the remainder thought it was a bad idea. One in four said they thought Canada should join the union.

2. Trump's respect for King Charles put him off annexing Canada: book

Donald Trump's respect for Canada's king, Charles III, helped contain the president's desire to annex parts of Canada, according to a new book by a British journalist. Robert Hardman's Elizabeth II: In Private. In Public. The Inside Story includes an interview with Trump in which the president is reported to have said of Canada: "Do they still recognize the King? Or have they stopped that?" He later conceded that he probably couldn't take Canada in the three and a half years then remaining in his presidential term. Trump added, however: "The problem is some guy drew that straight line to make a border. He should just have drawn it fifty miles further north and then there wouldn’t be a problem."

3. WestJet adds fuel surcharge as prices surge due to Iran war

WestJet has announced it will be adding a $60 surcharge to certain flights due to surging fuel prices caused by the Iran war. The airline said it will also be consolidating flights in an attempt to ride out high aviation fuel costs. A spokesperson said: "Fuel is the largest contributor to airline operating costs, and a temporary surcharge helps us manage the recent surge in fuel prices ... We will continue to assess the surcharge and adjust as conditions allow."

4. Eby accused of 'colonialism' and 'betrayal' by First Nations

David Eby has been accused of "colonialism" and "absolute betrayal" during a meeting with First Nations leaders on the topic of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act. A 17,000-word transcript of the meeting was leaked last week, revealing that the leaders fumed at the premier, with one accusing Eby of "Indian giving" and another saying his attitude "smacks of colonialism." It comes as the premier attempts to find a solution to his government's implementation of the declaration in BC law, which has led to high-profile legal decisions assigning Aboriginal title to stretches of the province.

5. Liberals in talks with 'up to 10 MPs' about potential floor-crossings

The Liberals are in discussion with "up to ten MPs" about potential floor-crossings, according to a journalist with La Presse. Joël-Denis Bellavance told CTV News that the Liberals are "still hoping to get more opposition MPs from the Conservative Party, or even the NDP. Not the Bloc Québécois, I don't think."
