Another catch-and-release case closed on April 8 in Prince George Provincial Court.
Dustin Lucas Daniel Wilson was sentenced to more than 31 months’ time served after he pleaded guilty to assaults causing bodily harm and breaches of release orders between 2022 and 2024.
“Mr. Wilson has been in and out of custody four times over the life of these files,” Crown prosecutor Eric Rines told Judge Rose Raven. “And, most recently, he has been in custody from September 2024 until present.”
Court heard that Wilson was arrested for a Feb. 25, 2022, attack on a woman in Kamloops. He struck her in the face with a closed fist, then she fell to the ground and he kicked her in the head, back and stomach. He also pulled her hair and caused a tooth to puncture her lip.
On Aug. 20, 2022, in Prince George, Wilson was involved in a fight at Rainbow Park. Back in Kamloops, on Dec. 7, 2022, Wilson and a man engaged in an argument in a Tim Hortons bathroom. The conflict escalated, and Wilson’s victim ended up bleeding on the floor and called the RCMP.
On Jan. 18, 2023, Wilson assaulted a taxi driver in Kelowna.
Wilson left the Integrity recovery house in Prince George without permission, contrary to a release order, on May 27, 2023. He breached another release order on Jan. 11, 2024, when he cut off an electronic monitor from his ankle.
Raven agreed to the joint Crown and defence proposal for the overall 945-day, time-served sentence. Wilson had been in custody for 656 days, which is worth 984 days under the time-and-a-half credit.
Raven ordered 12 months’ probation and a 10-year firearms ban for Wilson, who turns 24 years old on April 14.
Even though she was not provided with a pre-sentence report or a Gladue report on Wilson’s Indigenous background, Raven acknowledged several mitigating factors.
Those included the Gitxsan man’s time in foster care, that he witnessed and suffered abuse throughout his childhood and has abused substances, including alcohol, cannabis, ecstasy and amphetamine.
