A Prince George Provincial Court judge ordered a 17-year-old boy to spend another 15 days in the Burnaby Youth Custody Centre for disobeying curfew.
The boy, whose identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA), was under a 120-day supervision order after a January sentence on four offences. He had been released on community supervision on March 22, but breached conditions almost immediately and again the next day.
On the first day of community supervision, the boy did not return to his approved residence until 2:41 a.m. He also broke curfew the next day. His youth probation officer did not hear from him while he was at large until after his April 15 arrest by RCMP.
The warrant of apprehension issued March 24 paused the community supervision that was to expire May 1.
At the April 24 hearing, court heard the boy has 20 convictions for breaches of YCJA orders on his criminal record and two instances of failing to abide by a community supervision order.
Simpkin asked if he had anything to say.
Among other things, he said “I guess I messed up” and “should have done better.”
“What faith do I have that, in 15 days, we’re not going to be right back here with you ignoring terms of the supervision order?” Simpkin asked.
He answered it “just really sucked” being in cells waiting to appear in court.
“I want to spend my life, I want to be enjoying my life, I don’t want to be messing this up.”
